Just a typical day for our web-swinging hero. In this game from Activision, Stan Lee himself promises non-stop, web-slinging, wall-crawling action and just about delivers.

The game is definitely heavier on action than plot, though it does stay reasonably true to the comic books and features Spider-Man fighting a cast of characters any fan will recognize.

The plot is reminiscent of some of the older issues of Spider-Man, but the villains are all current hard to believe that Doc Oc is still around. The game can be played at one of four difficulty levels: easy, normal hard, and kid.

Overall, I liked the how the game played. I enjoyed being able to walk on walls, swing on webs, and in general, do whatever a spider can.

I've always liked 3D games where you can 'get off the ground' and this game is no exception. Tremendous jumping ability combined with several web-swinging options makes for a game with high mobility that is a lot of fun to move through.

Once you get the hang of the controls, moving around is easy. The point of view POV , however, has a couple of problems.

Generally, the POV is from behind Spider-Man; the main problem results from the fact that the POV correction lags slightly when you are doing a lot of maneuvering and it can be rather disorienting.

The directional controls also get a little cranky when crawling from one surface to another. The final scene features a chase where the perspective is fixed from one direction, which can lead to control difficulties while in side view.

But this is only for one scene and does make it look more dramatic. Combat is varied enough to keep it interesting with a variety of punch-, kick- and web-based attacks.

When you are within range of an enemy, attacks will automatically target the nearest bad guy, making the basic combat interface very simple.

This makes fighting easy for novices, though more experienced action game players might find it irritating. In general, fighting was straightforward, though I found some of the combinations impossible to get consistently.

The basic game itself features Spider-Man alternately swinging through the city and crawling around inside various complexes while fighting "flavor-of-the-week" bad guys.

There are usually only one or two types of bad guy per scene, with about half a dozen types overall. The end of each major section has Spidey facing off with a main boss, such as Venom or Rhino.

I found these fights to be the most fun, though I thought they were needlessly restricted in fighting area, such as when you fight Venom in an enclosed alley as opposed to across the rooftops.

As far as the ending goes, they say getting there is half the fun. Well, in this case, getting there was ALL the fun, so don't expect anything fancy once the last Boss goes down.

I also felt that the end sequence was the one place where the game drifted significantly from the genre. Outside of saving the world, the game has a number of other interesting features.

There is a training mode where you can practice beating on bad guys, swinging through the city, and maneuvering around inside a building.

There is a records area where you can see how you did in the training area. You can view the cut-scenes and 3D images and bios of characters you have seen in the game.

You can also jump to scenes in the game that you have completed and you can even view the credits without having to win.

Lastly, there are couple of options that will appeal to the die-hard Spider-Man fans. The first is the Comic Collection -- in the course of the game, you can pick up items that look like comic books.

Each of these lets you access one of 32 Spider-Man comic book covers, along with a brief synopsis of the issue. There are also a number of ways in the game and training to access what appears to be all of Spidey's costumes!

Some of these even have special abilities, such as the Black costume, which has unlimited webbing. Overall, the graphics in the game are satisfactory.

The characters move smoothly and have a fair amount of detail, though the scenery is a little sparse. The static comic book sequences at the beginning of each scene look a little grainy and can get tedious to scroll through.

However, comic book fans will like the feel it adds to the game and you can always skip them. The best thing I can say about the sound effects is that they are thorough.

You can hear everything from Spidey's pithy, wisecracking comments to the 'thwip' of the webline.

Plus, Stan Lee does his own voiceovers! The music reminds me of the theme to the old Spider-Man cartoons and added to the feel of the game for me.

Unfortunately, I can't get the song out of my head now. Though this game had several good points and was fun to play, it lacked long term entertainment value unless you are a die-hard Spider-Man fan.

Swinging around the city loses its thrill and one can only beat up the same six bad guy so many times. It also didn't take that long to beat on normal mode and the differences in difficulty pretty much amount to how many hits it takes to drop your opponent.

So, buy it if you really like Spider-Man; otherwise rent, win, and move on. Making his debut on the N64 courtesy of Activision, Spider-Man takes to the skyscrapers in full force this fall.

As one might expect, the animation is noticeably more fluid than the PS version. Don't worry, most of Spidey and Stan Lee's voice-overs should squeeze into the cart, if not every stitch of script found on the PlayStation disc.

As for the gameplay, if you've seen Spider-Man do it in the comics, you can do it in the game--sling between buildings, climb on walls and tangle enemies in your web.

It makes for some real variety in each level of the game, something not a lot of action titles can claim. Rhino, Venom and, of course, J. Jonah Jameson are some of the familiar faces you'll have to deal with as you help the wall-crawler unravel the sinister plottings of Doctor Octopus.

If it weren't for the indoor areas, I'd like Spider-Man a lot more. When you're swinging over the streets of New York, either looking for bad guys on rooftops or locked in mortal combat with the likes of Green Goblin or Vulture, this game is superb.

Even though one misstep could send Spidey plummeting to his doom, you always feel like you're in control of the situation. But then you enter some warehouse or subway station, and it all goes to hell.

On the ground, Spidey suffers from a lackluster combat system, an awful camera that never seems to swing around when you want it to and the same boss fights no matter which supervillain you happen to be facing.

I mean, is it too much to expect that Shocker would fight you differently than Scorpion or Green Goblin? Spider-Man feels like a bunch of great ideas that weren't fully realized, except for the web-swinging and aerial fighting.

At least those levels give you a reason to sit through the ground-based missions. Oh, well. Maybe next time Treyarch can match Neversoft's first Spider-Man title.

With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater , developer Neversoft showed they could make a game that lets players do absolutely everything actual skaters get away with in real life.

So you better believe Neversoft's Spider-Man game gives Spidey fans that same level of freedom. That's probably the first thing you'll notice when you put Peter Parker's alter ego though his paces in Spider-Man.

It brings back a lot of warm, fuzzy memories from my teenage years. Stan Lee even does some narration. But it does have a couple of annoying problems I can't overlook.

The levels are fresh and incredibly innovative, often playing out like a comic book. In other words, the game's consistently fast-paced. And any fan of comics will agree, it's great to see so many Marvel heroes and villains in one game--represented accurately to boot worlds apart from those lame Acclaim superhero titles.

It comes down to this: It's not quite as polished as some Neversoft games but it still has excellent gameplay, graphics, music and sound.

No doubt, you'll have a lot of fun playing through Spider-Man, unlocking all of its secrets. Without a doubt, this game lets you do everything a spider can.

You can cut loose with super-duper strength and nifty webbing tricks and, better still, you can adhere to nearly every surface.

Such ambitious game design makes for a few nasty problems, however. Both the camera and control go a little haywire when Spidey crawls into some nooks or leaps suddenly to a horizontal surface.

Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun just swinging around town. And the game packs a surprising amount of gameplay variety beyond regular of' webslinging.

The story is a jumble, the game's a bit short, later bosses get really frustrating, but hey-this thing's still fun. Once you get the hang of the controls, all of Spidey's webslinging moves look and feel just right--it's cool just to watch him go.

Production values are top-notch as well: great voicework and lots of it and crisp graphics courtesy of the Tony Hawk engine. But the damn camera!

It's too slow to catch up and it's constantly moving where you don't need or want it to be. Also, the fighting system may seem deep with all the different web moves you have tying guys up, pulling them toward you and smackin', shooting web-balls , but the most effective method ends up being a pretty boring punch-punch-punch, repeat.

For Spider-Man fans and newbies alike, Shattered Dimensions is a wild and inventive ride. The story in Shattered Dimensions starts with the Amazing Spider-Man battling Mysterio, who is caught attempting to steal the powerful artifact known as the Tablet of Order and Chaos.

During the scuffle, the tablet is split into several pieces, scattered over three different dimensions. With over a dozen pieces of the tablet to discover, the Spider-Men set off to their respective dimensions to recover what they can.

Along the way, you'll learn more about the true power of the Tablet of Order and Chaos. When compared to the Spider-Man movies or even some of the other games, the plot in Shattered Dimensions isn't all that remarkable.

The adventure is littered with familiar villains and other classic Spider-Man characters, providing an ample amount of nostalgia.

However, these numerous cameos aren't enough to really make you care about the characters. That said, there's enough action and excitement to keep you interested, so the lack of a compelling plot doesn't hurt Shattered Dimensions too much.

All topped off nicely by the charming voice of ubiquitous doyen, Stan Lee, introducing the game in his inimitable style. And it flows on a downhill gradient from there.

Spider-Man's ability to crawl on any surface may look good but, unfortunately, it's hard to control the way you're supposed to move because of the awkward camera.

In fact, the whole game is plagued by this problem: it's too slow in trying to keep up with all the action. Especially during the web-swinging levels, where the ability to break off and swing in a different direction is compounded by your lack of vision.

The camera adjusts itself automatically but there's no way to stop it and control it yourself, and because of this, the frustration factor is raised considerably.

Marks then for the autotargeting feature, which when fighting does something to alleviate this tardy camera problem. Not a lot mind you, but it helps.

Likewise, shooting webs -Spider-Man intelligently targets the closest wall without difficulty, but trying to see it yourself is a different matter entirely, if you don't adjust yourself or enter the ponderous target mode.

Talking about keeping it simple, yep, you guessed it: it's way too easy. There are four difficulty modes but even the hardest setting doesn't take long to complete.

That isn't to say it's not possible to die, because it is, rather it's the brevity of the levels themselves. There are 34 levels but most feel too short, some even seem like part of a level split by a short cut-scene.

You don't have any lives to speak of, but unlimited continues mean you can soon get past any tricky sections. What it does have, though, is a welcome attempt at variety.

What this means is one level will see you swinging through New York being chased over rooftops by a police chopper, another fighting your way over the top of a train, and a third defeating one of the bosses.

While not as mixed as it likes to think it is, it allows you to fully utilise Spider-Man's powers. The main fighting operates on a sub- Final Fight style level, with a high degree of mindless fist-and-forget non-tactical swedging going on.

Completing the game comes all too soon. There's an option to go back and play again, to find costumes and comics hidden throughout the levels, but this doesn't take long either.

The latter gives access to a gallery of old issue covers and a brief synopsis of their plots. For those interested in the history of the comic they're worth collecting.

Then again, it might have been better if they'd showed some of the actual pages inside. As a side note, they don't look that clear either, and could've been put in a higher resolution.

So, it's another console game transition that adds nothing new apart from a higher resolution and mouse support in the main menu.

The complete lack of opportunity to fix the camera, is a bit of a disappointment. The same goes with the ease of play. Which is a shame because, as a comic book game, it's one of the best around.

It just helps if you can see what you're doing most of the time. The thing about writing a preview to a game that's already been there and done that on PS, N64 and Dreamcast - and with a sequel on its way - is that all the jokes have been done before.

How am I supposed to fill space with tired jokes about Spider-Man getting washed down the plughole and eating flies if every other journalist in the business has managed to get there first?

Might as well get on with it We all know the bullet points by now. Done by the people who did the classic Tony Hawk's So, as the hype of the Sam Raimi-directed blockbuster behemoth ambles into consciousness, Activision have decided to port the game onto the PC.

Like most console conversions, though, don't expect much in the way of new features. In fact, don't expect more than minor graphical improvements in the way of new features.

Having said that, unlike most of Capcom's efforts, Activision have made sure the resolution can be ramped up to a crisp x as Spider-Man swings and slings his way over the towering phallic constructs of New York City.

The impenetrable green fog of the bits conveniently explained by the story still obscures the latte-drinking neurotics of the blood-strewn streets, though.

Compared to the comics - in which the storyline got so tangled up in a complex web of impostors, clones and spin-offs that they kept having to start again - we'll be getting a relatively straightforward story that ties in many of the elements from that wealth of dis continuity.

Which boils down to cramming in a host of Spidey's classic enemies for him to fight. Sinister special effects expert Mysterio, the mechanically limbed Doctor Octopus, and symbiotic alien-suit, Venom.

On the side of good, expect cameo appearances by the type of people who'd get pelted with paving slabs, wearing the kind of costumes they did, if they couldn't snap a man's neck with their little finger.

True believers can even explode at the sound of Stan Lee's ubiquitous voice introducing proceedings. After completion, players can replay levels to gain familiar costumes and hidden comics, ramping up the longevity and providing further immersion into the Marvel universe.

As well as standard punches and kicks, Spider-Man can call on his web fluid to complement his moves, pull himself onto distant surfaces, and shield himself from attack.

A favourite of ours being the ability to capture, then yank a felon towards a waiting fist. Along with the ability to crawl on any surface, you're getting the whole experience.

The question is, whether the camera can keep up. We should have the demo ready for you to try out for yourself next issue, along with a full review where we'll be able to tell you whether this and the controls can carry through the whole game without irritation.

While we know how well it did on console, we're going to pretend we've never heard of it before so we can give you our opinion when it arrives on the rectangular beige monstrosity.

Which isn't in fact as stupid as it sounds, as we've seen countless examples of so-called good console games not performing so well on the PC.

But there have been a handful that actually do work. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 , for instance Spider-Man does look surprisingly promising, though, and is already acclaimed as one of the most faithful comic book adaptations yet.

We just need to find out how it plays in the assumedly arcade-hostile world of the PC. Listen up, true believers!

Once again trouble has entered the life of Spider-Man. A Spidey imposter has robbed a high-tech expo, Venom is on the warpath again, and an unknown villain is plotting to take over the world!

Just a typical day for our web-swinging hero. In this game from Activision, Stan Lee himself promises non-stop, web-slinging, wall-crawling action and just about delivers.

The game is definitely heavier on action than plot, though it does stay reasonably true to the comic books and features Spider-Man fighting a cast of characters any fan will recognize.

The plot is reminiscent of some of the older issues of Spider-Man, but the villains are all current hard to believe that Doc Oc is still around.

The game can be played at one of four difficulty levels: easy, normal hard, and kid. Overall, I liked the how the game played. I enjoyed being able to walk on walls, swing on webs, and in general, do whatever a spider can.

I've always liked 3D games where you can 'get off the ground' and this game is no exception. Tremendous jumping ability combined with several web-swinging options makes for a game with high mobility that is a lot of fun to move through.

Once you get the hang of the controls, moving around is easy. The point of view POV , however, has a couple of problems. Generally, the POV is from behind Spider-Man; the main problem results from the fact that the POV correction lags slightly when you are doing a lot of maneuvering and it can be rather disorienting.

The directional controls also get a little cranky when crawling from one surface to another. The final scene features a chase where the perspective is fixed from one direction, which can lead to control difficulties while in side view.

But this is only for one scene and does make it look more dramatic. Combat is varied enough to keep it interesting with a variety of punch-, kick- and web-based attacks.

When you are within range of an enemy, attacks will automatically target the nearest bad guy, making the basic combat interface very simple.

This makes fighting easy for novices, though more experienced action game players might find it irritating. In general, fighting was straightforward, though I found some of the combinations impossible to get consistently.

The basic game itself features Spider-Man alternately swinging through the city and crawling around inside various complexes while fighting "flavor-of-the-week" bad guys.

There are usually only one or two types of bad guy per scene, with about half a dozen types overall. The end of each major section has Spidey facing off with a main boss, such as Venom or Rhino.

I found these fights to be the most fun, though I thought they were needlessly restricted in fighting area, such as when you fight Venom in an enclosed alley as opposed to across the rooftops.

As far as the ending goes, they say getting there is half the fun. Well, in this case, getting there was ALL the fun, so don't expect anything fancy once the last Boss goes down.

I also felt that the end sequence was the one place where the game drifted significantly from the genre. Outside of saving the world, the game has a number of other interesting features.

There is a training mode where you can practice beating on bad guys, swinging through the city, and maneuvering around inside a building.

There is a records area where you can see how you did in the training area. You can view the cut-scenes and 3D images and bios of characters you have seen in the game.

You can also jump to scenes in the game that you have completed and you can even view the credits without having to win. Lastly, there are couple of options that will appeal to the die-hard Spider-Man fans.

The first is the Comic Collection -- in the course of the game, you can pick up items that look like comic books. Each of these lets you access one of 32 Spider-Man comic book covers, along with a brief synopsis of the issue.

There are also a number of ways in the game and training to access what appears to be all of Spidey's costumes! Some of these even have special abilities, such as the Black costume, which has unlimited webbing.

Overall, the graphics in the game are satisfactory. The characters move smoothly and have a fair amount of detail, though the scenery is a little sparse.

The static comic book sequences at the beginning of each scene look a little grainy and can get tedious to scroll through. However, comic book fans will like the feel it adds to the game and you can always skip them.

The best thing I can say about the sound effects is that they are thorough. You can hear everything from Spidey's pithy, wisecracking comments to the 'thwip' of the webline.

Plus, Stan Lee does his own voiceovers! The music reminds me of the theme to the old Spider-Man cartoons and added to the feel of the game for me.

Unfortunately, I can't get the song out of my head now. Though this game had several good points and was fun to play, it lacked long term entertainment value unless you are a die-hard Spider-Man fan.

Swinging around the city loses its thrill and one can only beat up the same six bad guy so many times. It also didn't take that long to beat on normal mode and the differences in difficulty pretty much amount to how many hits it takes to drop your opponent.

So, buy it if you really like Spider-Man; otherwise rent, win, and move on. Making his debut on the N64 courtesy of Activision, Spider-Man takes to the skyscrapers in full force this fall.

As one might expect, the animation is noticeably more fluid than the PS version. Don't worry, most of Spidey and Stan Lee's voice-overs should squeeze into the cart, if not every stitch of script found on the PlayStation disc.

As for the gameplay, if you've seen Spider-Man do it in the comics, you can do it in the game--sling between buildings, climb on walls and tangle enemies in your web.

It makes for some real variety in each level of the game, something not a lot of action titles can claim. Rhino, Venom and, of course, J. Jonah Jameson are some of the familiar faces you'll have to deal with as you help the wall-crawler unravel the sinister plottings of Doctor Octopus.

If it weren't for the indoor areas, I'd like Spider-Man a lot more. When you're swinging over the streets of New York, either looking for bad guys on rooftops or locked in mortal combat with the likes of Green Goblin or Vulture, this game is superb.

Even though one misstep could send Spidey plummeting to his doom, you always feel like you're in control of the situation.

But then you enter some warehouse or subway station, and it all goes to hell. On the ground, Spidey suffers from a lackluster combat system, an awful camera that never seems to swing around when you want it to and the same boss fights no matter which supervillain you happen to be facing.

I mean, is it too much to expect that Shocker would fight you differently than Scorpion or Green Goblin? Spider-Man feels like a bunch of great ideas that weren't fully realized, except for the web-swinging and aerial fighting.

At least those levels give you a reason to sit through the ground-based missions. Oh, well. Maybe next time Treyarch can match Neversoft's first Spider-Man title.

With Tony Hawk's Pro Skater , developer Neversoft showed they could make a game that lets players do absolutely everything actual skaters get away with in real life.

Regardless of what Spider-Man you're playing as, you can expect explosive and enjoyable action based around his signature abilities. As you defeat enemies and complete combat challenges, you'll be awarded points depending on your performance.

You can use these points to unlock new combos, finishing moves, and upgrades. You'll need to buff up as much as possible, as Shattered Dimensions heavily features boss fights throughout the experience.

The previously mentioned villain cameos often come in the form of boss battles, with some levels containing multiple fights. These are often the high-point of each level, offering both a spectacle and adrenaline rush.

Spider-Man superfans will have an absolute blast beating through the long list of memorable villains, resulting in a gleeful trip down memory lane.

Although Shattered Dimensions occasionally runs into technical problems and wonky game mechanics, there's a lot of interesting content to enjoy.

The crossover concept alone is enough to get any Spider-Man fan interested and the consistently enjoyable combat and surprise cameos keep you playing.

If you've only ever seen the Spider-Man films, this stylish spin-off should open your eyes to some of the lesser-known versions of Spider-Man.

Solid voice-acting and a flurry of character cameos keep the otherwise underwhelming plot afloat, so don't go into this game expecting an amazing narrative.

If you're looking to web-swing and knock the snot out of enemies using distinct Spider-Man powers, then you should play Shattered Dimensions.

In the main storyline, the super-human crime lord Mister Negative orchestrates a plot to seize control of New York City's criminal underworld.

When Mister Negative threatens to release a deadly virus, Spider-Man must confront him and protect the city while dealing with the personal problems of his civilian persona, Peter Parker.

Gameplay is presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on Spider-Man's traversal and combat abilities.

Spider-Man can freely move around New York City, interacting with characters, undertaking missions, and unlocking new gadgets and suits by progressing through the main story or completing tasks.

Outside the story, the player is able to complete side missions to unlock additional content and collectible items.

Combat focuses on chaining attacks together and using the environment and webs to incapacitate numerous foes while avoiding damage.

Development of Spider-Man , the first licensed game by Insomniac in its thenyear history, began in and took approximately four years. Insomniac was given the choice of using any character from Marvel's catalog to work on; Spider-Man was chosen both for his appeal to the employees and the similarities in traversal gameplay to their previous game Sunset Overdrive The game design took inspiration from the history of Spider-Man across all media but Marvel Comics and Insomniac wanted to tell an original story that was not linked to an existing property, creating a unique universe known as Earth that has since appeared in novels, merchandise, and comics.

Spider-Man was released for the PlayStation 4 on September 7, The game received praise for its narrative, characterization, combat, and web-swinging traversal mechanics, although some criticized its open-world design for lacking innovation.

A number of reviewers called it one of the best superhero games ever made, some comparing it favorably to the Batman: Arkham series.

It won several year-end accolades from a variety of gaming publications , critics, and game award ceremonies. A Game of the Year edition was released in August Spider-Man is an open-world action-adventure game set in the borough of Manhattan in a fictionalized version of modern-day New York City.

The player can precisely aim webs to pull himself towards specific points. Combat is enacted using three buttons; one for dodging, one for physical strikes, and one for web-based attacks.

Enemies who are knocked from great heights are automatically stuck to a nearby surface in a web-cocoon, preventing death. Successful and consecutive attacks build "Focus", which can be partially used to heal Spider-Man, while full Focus allows special finishing attacks to take down an enemy instantly.

A precise dodge performed just before the attack hits allows Spider-Man to retaliate with webbing against the enemy. Melee-weapon-wielding enemies must be knocked into the air and shielded enemies must be attacked from behind.

Other types of enemy include heavily armored agents who can take more damage, brutes, and jetpack-wearing enemies who remain airborne.

Spider-Man has access to a variety of gadgets that can be deployed in combat; these include electric webbing, concussive blasts, and impact webbing that launches enemies backwards and can stick them to a nearby surface.

Many of these offer special abilities that can aid in combat, such as increasing Focus gain, reducing gravity, enhancing stealth, making the player invulnerable, and unleashing an electromagnetic pulse to disable enemy weapons.

Once unlocked, suits and powers can be freely combined. Suits, suit mods, gadgets, and their associated upgrades are purchased with resources called Tokens, which are awarded for completion of specific tasks.

Spider-Man features a large ensemble cast of characters drawn from the history of Spider-Man comics. Peter Parker voiced by Yuri Lowenthal [26] is a year-old research assistant, [4] [27] who gains superhuman abilities after being bitten by a genetically-modified spider.

Assuming a secret identity as the superhero Spider-Man, Peter uses these abilities to protect the residents of New York City.

Otto Octavius William Salyers. Jonah Jameson Darin De Paul —have voice roles in the main game. Davis is lauded for his heroism at a re-election event for Mayor Norman Osborn.

The Demons attack the event, killing Davis and many other attendees. Peter witnesses Martin Li transforming into their leader, Mister Negative, but is knocked unconscious before he can intervene.

Peter befriends Davis' son Miles and persuades him to volunteer at F. Peter and Otto Octavius continue their research into advanced prosthetic limbs, but Osborn withdraws their funding in an attempt to force Octavius to work for his mega-corporation Oscorp.

While searching for Li, Spider-Man discovers that Devil's Breath is a lethal, virulent bioweapon inadvertently created by Oscorp while developing a cure for genetic diseases.

Li locates and steals the only sample of Devil's Breath and threatens to release it unless Osborn surrenders to him.

Li is foiled by Mary Jane and Spider-Man and subsequently incarcerated at a nearby maximum-security prison called the Raft , while the Devil's Breath is secured.

Meanwhile, Octavius obsesses over creating enhanced limbs that exceed the limitations of the human body, creating four mechanical tentacles operated from his back and mentally controlled via a neural interface.

He reveals to Peter that he is suffering from a neuromuscular disease that will inevitably immobilize him, and that enhanced limbs will allow him to continue his work when his body fails.

Peter warns Octavius that the interface could impact his mind and personality. Octavius continues its use in secret, overcome with anger at Osborn.

While investigating a breakout at the Raft, Spider-Man learns that some of his greatest enemies—Li, Electro, Vulture, Rhino, and Scorpion—have escaped.

They subdue Spider-Man and present him to Octavius, now "Doctor Octopus," who warns the beaten Spider-Man not to interfere before retaking the Devil's Breath and releasing it in Times Square, causing a mass outbreak that infects numerous people, including Aunt May.

New York descends into chaos while Octavius' team attacks the city. Osborn declares martial law and blames Spider-Man for the incident, branding him a fugitive.

Mary Jane infiltrates Osborn's penthouse and learns that Devil's Breath was developed to cure Osborn's terminally ill son Harry. She also learns that an antidote for Devil's Breath exists and that Li has stolen it.

Spider-Man tracks down and defeats Li, but Octavius arrives, brutalizes Spider-Man, and escapes with the antidote and Osborn. While Spider-Man recovers, Miles is bitten by an Oscorp genetically modified spider that Mary Jane unknowingly carried from Osborn's penthouse.

Wounded, Peter builds himself an armored suit and confronts Octavius atop Oscorp Tower, rescuing Osborn. Octavius reveals that he knows Peter's secret identity and the two fight.

Spider-Man recovers the antidote and defeats Octavius, leaving him to be arrested. Peter is forced to choose between using the limited cure to save May from her imminent death or synthesize a vaccine for the infected masses; he chooses to save everyone.

Before she dies, May reveals that she knows he is Spider-Man, and that she is proud of him. Three months later, New York has returned to normal and Peter and Mary Jane rekindle their relationship.

Miles reveals to Peter that he has gained spider-like powers, prompting Peter to reveal his own. Osborn enters a secret laboratory where Harry is kept in stasis with a black, web-like substance.

As Osborn places his hand on the tank, the substance reacts and copies him. Price recalled having a "fairly neutral" response, as Insomniac had only developed original properties, but his developers were enthusiastic about the project.

The project marked a change in Marvel's video games strategy; Jay Ong, Senior Vice President of Marvel Games , said Marvel had previously released software based on or tied to the release of films based on their properties, but this meant game developers did not have time to create impressive products.

Publisher Activision had been responsible for Spider-Man games since ; Ong said this would no longer be the case and future Spider-Man games were in the hands of Sony and Insomniac.

Creative director Bryan Intihar said "I feel like he's the most relatable of the heroes. As much as I love Tony Stark , it's harder to identify with a billionaire.

As much as I love Thor , it's hard to identify with a god. Peter makes mistakes, he has ups and downs in his career, his relationships, his family.

I think we can all relate to that. He's also the most popular Marvel character in the world, I think".

Price also considered the technical benefits; Sunset Overdrive has a dynamic traversal system that could be built upon for Spider-Man.

While initially excited, team members found the project daunting because of Spider-Man's popularity and the wealth of existing stories and versions of the character.

Art director Jacinda Chew saw opportunity in the character's extensive history, and consulted online references and Marvel staff with extensive knowledge of the character.

He said they wanted to keep players engaged, starting with the Spider-Man: The City that Never Sleeps downloadable content DLC , whose story continues after the conclusion of the main game.

Intihar worked with a team of writers, under lead writer Jon Paquette to create an original version of Spider-Man that remained true to the original.

Christos Gage co-wrote the script and Dan Slott provided additional story contributions. The team learned that whenever Spider-Man wins, Peter Parker loses, and vice versa.

Intihar said that from conception, the game was designed to be as much Peter's story as Spider-Man's. Working with voice director Kris Zimmerman , Lowenthal tried to differentiate his voices for Peter—where he is gentler—and as Spider-Man, where he is more confident, [50] but thought the voices should not be completely different and spent a large amount of time practicing his performances to achieve a balance.

Paquette persuaded the studio to cast him in the role because he trusted Lowenthal's acting ability and would not have brought him up otherwise.

Multiple versions of the same conversation were recorded for Spider-Man's open-world dialogue for his at-rest state and that of exertion; for instance in combat or web-swinging.

The recordings can switch mid-conversation if Spider-Man switches from resting to being in combat. Peter's relationship with Otto Octavius came from a desire to give him a job that embraced his intelligence.

The writers considered ways to make that job interesting; they thought of having him work for Otto and be partly responsible for creating one of his greatest nemeses.

Paquette emphasized the pair's relationship, aiming to make Otto a tragic figure, optimist, and mentor to Peter instead of the more traditional megalomaniac.

Paquette said that he wanted to detail their friendship to give Otto's transformation into Doctor Octopus more meaning.

Chew researched Otto's historical comic-book depiction and design, noting his bowl cut hairstyle and green glasses, but chose to modernize his appearance to make him balding and nerdy.

Intihar described Otto and Peter as parallels of each other in many ways, particularly their intelligence and compassion.

When depicting Peter's relationship with Mary Jane Watson, the writers wanted to demonstrate that she has her own skills that allow her to be a hero in her own right, requiring Peter to learn not to be overprotective of her and to rely on other people.

The death of Aunt May at the end of the game was considered vital to Peter's growth and a challenge because May has a large role in historical Spider-Man stories; Paquette said the moment had to be earned.

Early in the story, May advises Peter that he is only human; Paquette said the message she gives is to not take on too much himself and learn to rely on other people.

By the game's third act, Peter learns to rely on Mary Jane and Miles, though by this point it is too late to save everyone and Peter is given an "impossible choice".

Paquette described this as the heroic sacrifice that reveals something deep about the character and what he really cares about. May's death was described as an echo of Peter's Uncle Ben 's, who dies because Peter makes a selfish decision; May dies because he makes a completely selfless one.

As a result, Peter will feel mixed guilt. A bittersweet but happier scene between Peter and Mary Jane was inserted to end the game on a more positive note.

His ally police chief captain Yuri Watanabe was written as a kindred spirit who shares with Spider-Man a sense of responsibility to protect the city and its inhabitants regardless of the personal cost.

Paquette described Mister Negative as the hero of his own story; his origin is designed to give purpose to both Norman Osborn—who is doing bad things with the goal of saving his son—and Otto.

Jonah Jameson 's podcast rants were written by Gage, who said he related to being a grouchy, middle-aged man. Gage considered that despite repeatedly blaming Spider-Man for events, the podcasts give the player insight to city residents' thoughts about Spider-Man and current affairs.

Silver Sable was added because Gage felt that a force to increase the stakes as events in the city turn dire was needed. The in-game social media posts were written by members of Insomniac staff and Sony's QA department.

As the playable character moves through it, out-of-view tiles are unloaded from memory and are replaced with tiles in view. Chief architect and core director Mike Fitzgerald said that when moving at Spider-Man's top speed, a new tile is loaded every second.

For swinging, the team wanted to create a fun experience without making the physics too realistic. They combined camera movements, character animations, and field of view to make movement feel more heroic.

All architecture in the game world contains numerous anchor points; the ideal point is selected to maintain current momentum and direction.

The game's final boss is rendered with a million polygons , the most Insomniac had used to render a character at that time. Insomniac wanted to modernize Spider-Man's costume while paying homage to the original design by Steve Ditko.

The new design features a large, white spider symbol that stretches across the torso, gauntlet-like gloves, and a sneaker-style design based on athletic-wear rather than knee-high boots.

Chew said the design goal was to create clothing a "year-old, would-be superhero" would wear in New York City. White was added to the traditional, red-and-blue color scheme.

Chew compared the outfit to compression wear and said each color represents a different material; blue is the most flexible and is where Spider-Man requires the most flexibility, such as his limbs.

The red material is flexible but is thicker for protection from minor scuffs and scrapes, and the white, which is similar to carbon fiber and offers the most protection, is positioned on the chest, hands and feet.

Chew said they aimed to use many body types for female characters.
